In the 60's and 70's of last century butoh was an underground, revolutionary, scandalous anti-art, a revolt against tradition and establishment, causing general public outrage by a perceived offence against morality and law.

In this century, contemporary butoh has established itself as a commercial mainstream scene with process oriented workshops, traditions, text books, rules, regulations and political correctness.

Free Butoh is an effort to deconstruct and disrupt modern butoh and move it back into a revolt of the body.

Projects and Camps

Happy Butoh Project

at the Life Resonance Art Center

in Dharamsala

liferesonanceartcenter@gmail.com

Using play and the joy of creation, we disrupt the frustrations and darkness of the body.

Engaging our inner child, we shed a lifetime of education and cultural programming.

Putting our attention on feeling the body, we enter a more natural state of being.

The sessions will center around three important concepts:

Conditionings

We will research various ways to stop the daily mind and get into a butoh trance.

Necessity

We will find different ways to discover the Blood of Dance needed to make a spirited performance. A journey into the subconsciousness.

Performance

Butoh is not freedom. Butoh is freedom in a box. We will find new ways to build performances, using Instant Composition techniques.

Rural Butoh Research Camp

IruWay Farm

Durgadahalli, Karnataka, India

The Rural Butoh Research Camp is a place where performers, dancers and other body work oriented creators can experiment with new ways of creating a new kind of beauty.

Away from the city, the traffic and the tourists we discover the simple quiet peace of a small village next to a national forest.

The daily mind gets quiet...

The camp is guided by Honza Svasek, a visual artist and butoh performer from the Netherlands and Ivana Indjin, a performer, theater director and expressive technique therapist from Serbia.

There is a limited amount of places and the minimum participation time is one week.

Relaxing, the body reconnects with the subtle rhythms of the natural environment.

The hills, the forest, the caves, the sky, and the weather become our teachers.

There is enough time and space for individual and collective research, play and performance.

We organize an open community kitchen where we cook and eat together. We buy food together, usually no more that 1-2 euro/day is needed for that.

Every working day there is a morning session which you are expected to follow. Optionally, an early morning exercise and and an afternoon session can be co-created by the participants.

Weekends are open. Other projects, like performances and co-creations with other artists at the Farm will usually develop.

All participants participate in basic housekeeping tasks such as cooking, cleaning etc.

There is some sleeping places already built, but it is best to bring your own tent, sleeping bags etc.

Our location you can find here, it is 15 Km from Tumkur from where you can travel by bus or auto rickshaw to the Farm.
